half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, raised bands. Extremities

First edition. "[Beltrami] found his way to the upper reaches of
the Mississippi River, where he joined an expedition led by Maj.
Stephen Long. The latter wrote of him, 'an Italian whom we met at Fort
St. Anthony, attached himself to the expedition and accompanied us to
Pembina.' Beltrami subsequently traveled down the Mississippi to New
Orleans" - Wagner-Camp. "He undertook a hazardous and lonely
journey in his search for the sources of the Mississippi and other
rivers, in which he claimed success" - Clark. An expanded English
translation was printed in London in 1828, and included a folding map
illustrating the routes travelled in America, detailing Beltrami's
view of the geography of the headwaters of the Mississippi. The
inclusion of the map in the later edition came in response to the
criticism the author received for not providing a map in this, the

Crittenden Compromise was the most important proposal made in 1860-61
in the attempt to solve the conflict between North and South by
peaceful measures. The plan, presented to the U.S. Senate, Dec. 18,
1860 by Crittenden of Kentucky, included six articles proposed as
amendments to the Constitution, and four resolutions. The hear of the
compromise was in the first article, which provided that north of
36" 30", the line of the Missouri Compromise," in all
territory then held or thereafter acquired, slavery was to be
prohibited, south of the line slavery, was to be protected as
property. Crittenden's proposal referred only to territory then held,
but an amendment was added "or hereafter acquired" Other
articles prohibited Congress from abolishing slavery in places under
Federal jurisdiction in the slave states, or in the District of
Columbia without compensation and consent of Virginia and Maryland.
The last article provided that there should be no constitutional
amendment to alter the other five articles of the compromise, and that
Congress should have no power to interfere with slavery where it then
existed. 375.00

DOCUMENT IN FRENCH AND SPANISH, SIGNED, BY JEAN PIERRE CHOUTEAU AND
DON CARLOS DEHAULT DELASSUS, CONCERNING A LAND GRANT OF 30,000 ARPENTS
IN THE VICINITY OF SALINE COUNTY, MISSOURI]. Fort Carondelet,
Nations of the Great and Little Osage Indians. Nov. 19, 1799. 3pp.
written on folded sheet, plus 3pp. 19th-century manuscript translation
into English. Folio. Old crease marks. Some tears at folds, moderate
edge chipping. Overall good. First edition. Chouteau, an important fur
trader and Indian agent, was stationed with the Osage tribe at Fort
Carondelet between 1794 and 1802. His influence among the Osage was
considerable during that time, as his family's firm held the monopoly
of Osage trade. In 1802, Jefferson appointed him United States Agent
for the Osage. In the present manuscript document, Chouteau petitions
the governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory for a large tract of
land within present-day Saline County, Missouri, a locale rich with
salt. The English version of Chouteau's petition states in part:
"Pierre Chouteau Lieutenant of Militia and Commandant of the Fort
of Carondelet in the Nations of the Great and Little Osages has the
honor of representing to you, that being often stopped in his travels
for the want of water in the Osage river, he has formed, in
consequence, the project of a considerable establishment, at sixty
miles above said river, on the south side of the Missouri, for you to
have the goodness to grant to him 30,000 arpents of land, in which
quantity shall be comprised the river to the mine, and also the salt
springs which the petitioner has the intention of working and
improving at such time when, less troubled by the Indian nations, he
may give more attention to his industry...the daily troubles he had
taken to maintain good order among the Osage Nations as proprietor of
the exclusive trade with the Indians, these will be sufficient
consideration to determine you to grant him the favor which he claims
of the generosity of the government...Pierre Chouteau." Delassus'
reply, executed in the same secretarial hand as Chouteau's petition,
answers with the following: "Having seen the statement in the
foregoing memorial and being convinced of the truth of what is
alleged, is worthy of the favors and benevolence of the government by
the zeal with which [Chouteau] conducted himself in his employment and
activity among the Indian Nations, that the tract of land which he
solicits is situated at too great a distance from these settlements to
be prejudicial to any person and that his projects of improvement must
have a result beneficial to all this country. I have determined to
grant him the 30,000 arpents of land...Don Carlos Dehault Delassus."
A choice manuscript document, predating the Louisiana Purchase by
three years, signed by both a prominent pioneer fur trader/Indian
agent, and the governor of Upper Louisiana Territory. DAB IV, p.93
