363. Stevens, Isaac I. ADDRESS TO THE DEMOCRACY AND THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES , BY THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Wash.,, M'Gillard Witherow, 1860. 16pp. dbd. First edition. The Democrats" tumultuous convention of 1860-- protracted over two months, convening in Charleston, and [after a Southern walkout] recessing and reconvening in Baltimore-- presaged the destruction of the National Democratic Party, the only remaining national political institution. Breckinridge and the Southern Democrats, calling themselves the "National" Democratic Party, here mount an all-out attack on Stephen A. Douglas, the candidate of the Northern Democrats. His only difference with Lincoln is "in making insidious, instead of open, war upon the South." Douglas's Popular Sovereignty doctrine, and refusal to support Slave Codes for protecting slave owners in the Territories, disregards the Dred Scott decision. This pamphlet was also issued in 1860 with the Washington DC imprint of M'Gill & Wetherow. Sabin 414 200.00

Taylor is considered one of the premier early systematic theorists of states' rights. This is the third of four full-scale books written by him and published between 1814 and 1823, in which he develops his theory of the U.S. Constitution and discusses its effect on social policies, particularly taxation, banking, and tariffs. In this work he treats mainly protectionism, with a good deal of discussion on the currency as well. HOWES T65. SABIN 94495. COHEN 6334. 1500.00

373. Taylor, Joseph. 374. [TAYLOR, ZACHARY]. Adams, John Calvin. GENERAL TAYLOR AND THE WILMOT PROVISO. [Boston, 1848]. 31,[1]pp. Self wrappers, rebacked in cloth, x-library. First edition. This pamphlet reflects the alarm of anti-slavery Whigs at the possibility of Taylor's nomination. A Louisiana slave holder and political cipher, he would surely oppose the Wilmot Proviso barring slavery from the conquered Mexican Cession. Taylor surprised everyone during his sort stay in office b his vigorous anti-slavery, pro-Union stance. Not in Sabin or Miles. 175.00

375. [TAYLOR, ZACHARY]. A SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICES OF GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR, THE PEOPLE'S CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT. [Wash.,, Towers, 1848]. 32pp. dbd. Howes T80. First edition. This edition appears to be a reprint of the original 1847 campaign pamphlet. Myles 255. 125.00

376. [TEXAS]. ABSTRACT OF TEXAS COURT CASE BROUGHT BY SHERIFF JOHN W. MOORE, PROTESTING COURT COSTS ASSIGNED HIM BY HARRIS COUNTY CLERK D. W. C. HARRIS FOR 148 CASES. Houston, Republic of Texas, 1843. 22 leaves, handwritten in blue ink on lined paper 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 ribbon tie at top. Republic of Texas court document, with a signed autograph statement at end by Francis R. Lubbock, county clerk and later governor, attesting to its authenticity. One of the interesting features of the document is the listing of each of the 148 cases for which Moore is being charged court costs. Moore, who was in danger of losing his house as a result of the costs, alleges the "judgments above named are erroneous and the executions thereon ought not to be issued... the rule should have been for one judgment in all the cases instead of one judgment in each case..." 500.00

377. [TEXAS]. Ehrenberg, Hermann. FAHRTEN UND SCHICKSALE EINES DEUTSCHEN IN TEXAS. Leipzig, 1845. iv,258,[2]pp. Contemporary brown cloth, rebacked with backstrip in similar brown cloth, new paper label. Marginal wear to old boards, new endpapers. Text lightly tanned, with a few old stains. Good. Third edition, after the first of 1843, and the first with this title. "One of the earliest German accounts of Texas, this is also an important source work on the events of the Texas Revolution" - Jenkins. Ehrenberg emigrated from Germany to New Orleans, and joined the Louisiana Greys to fight in aid of Texas in 1835. He took part in the siege of Bexar, the battle of Coleto in March 1836, and the Fannin massacre, from which he escaped. Later he took part in the gold rush and the early settlement of California. 378. [TEXAS]. Ewell, Thomas T. A HISTORY OF HOOD COUNTY TEXAS, FROM ITS EARLIEST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT.... Granbury, Tx, Granbury News, 1895. [4],161,[3]pp. plus 16pp. of advertising interspersed. Original gilt cloth. Cloth slightly spotted, hinges weak. Closed tear in title-leaf, printed on poor paper. Good. A rare Texas county history. The titlepage calls for a "Sketch of the History of Somervell County," not present here. Judging by the collation given by Howes, the latter occupied two leaves at the end of the text. However, this copy has far more advertising leaves than called for by Howes and agrees with the collation given by Jenkins. In any case, the history of Hood County, a quite early Texas county history, is complete. CBC 2475. HOWES E239. 1250.00

379. [TEXAS]. Niles, John M. and Lorraine T. Pease. HISTORY OF SOUTH AMERICAN AND MEXICO... TO WHICH IS ANNEXED, A GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL WITH OF TEXAS, WITH A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF THE TEXIAN REVOLUTION AND WAR. Harford, Huntington, 1838. 2 vols. in one. Illus., frontispiece depicting the Battle of Jacinto; portraits of Santa Anna and Sam Houston; folding map "Mexico and Texas" 33 x 36 cm; folding map of South America at the end of volume two is undated and has an inset of Guatemala. Maps are colorful and bright. Original tree calf with gilt decorate spine with title in gilt on spine. This is an excellent contemporary account of the Texas Revolution and its beginnings. The account includes reprinting of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Burleson's report on the taking of Bexar in December, 1835, the Travis letter of February 24 1836, and several other reports and documents. The map of Mexico and Texas is quite colorful and is usually missing. Howes N156. Raines p. 163. Hill, Pacific Voyages p.212. The engraved title page depicting the Battle of the Alamo is quite nice. 1500.00

380. Thompson, Charles. Batavia, N.Y.: Published by D.D. Waite, 1841. 256pp. 16mo. Contemporary boards, rebacked in antique tan morocco, gilt title on spine. Some light scattered staining, mostly in margins of first dozen or so leaves. Very good. A great Mormon rarity, this book was suppressed by Brigham Young because of its sensational content. "De Puy, No. 2349. 'One of the rarest of all Mormon books.' Mrs. Pond, the Nauvoo authority, states that 'Brigham Young called in all the copies that the Saints had.' 'The truth of this book,' says the author, 'is established by positive living testimony. And this testimony is given by men who have been whipt, robbed, plundered, imprisoned and shot, and whose blood has crimsoned freedom's soil to test the depth of their sincerity.'" Not in Sabin. Since 1965, only a single copy of this rarity has appeared at auction. HOWES T188 FLAKE 8934. De PUY 2349. EBERSTADT 110:200. CRAWLEY 134. 6500.00

He was a kind of troubadour himself." DOBIE, pp.122, 129. MERRILL ARISTOCRAT. 1350.00
