Coulter 426: "As the author admits, this book is a sort of "medley or hodgepodge"; yet as Private Spangler, a member of the 130th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, participated in the marches and battles associated with Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, he had occasion on his travels to offer some observations and comments. N.p., Leopold, 1887. 110pp. Original pictorial 12 mo wrappers, rebacked. Illus., port. First edition. Wilson blamed his plight on demon rum, but it was his size, as many as anything, that did for him. He was only five feet, two inches tall and weighed a little over one hundred pounds. Dealy, a farmer at Chestnut Hill, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, for whom he worked, would not pay him his wages, and in a fit of anger and intoxication, Wilson killed him with a cleaver. A rare American work on bridge building, which describes Pope's plan for a great "flying pendent lever bridge" over the Hudson River. This is only the second American book on the subject of bridge building, the first being AN ESSAY ON BUILDING WOODEN BRIDGES (1797), by Charles W. Peale. Pope surveys the world's great bridges and includes handsome engravings of the Hampton Court Bridge, Wearmouth-Bridge, the Bridge of the Louvre over the Seine, as well as his proposed bridge over the Hudson. In addition to his architectural pursuits, Pope was an accomplished gardener and shipbuilder. Pope's patented design, although apparently not appreciated in his day, became the basis for the cantilever bridge. $1000.00

302. Porter, David. AN EXPOSITION OF THE FACTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH JUSTIFIED THE EXPEDITION TO FOXARDO, AND THE CONSEQUENCES THEREOF. TOGETHER WITH THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE COURT OF INQUIRY THEREON, HELD BY ORDER OF THE HON. SECRETARY OF THE NAVY. Wash., Davis and Force, 1825. 107pp. Contemporary cloth, bookplate removed, small paper label on lower spine. First edition. Shaw 21939, locates 4 copies. Rare and quite important. Porter resigned from the Naval Board in 1823 to become Commander-in-Chief of the West India Squadron then employed in suppressing piracy, a tedious, laborious and dangerous task, which he performed so effectively that when he turned over the squadron to his successor this nefarious practice was nearing its end. In his assiduous search for pirates, one of the officers landed at Fajardo, Puerto Rico, and received ill treatment at the hands of the local authorities. Porter landed a considerable force in retaliation, seized a fort, and demanded and received apologies. For these hostile acts against a friendly power, he was recalled by the Secretary of the Navy and court martial. The court sentenced him to suspension from duty for six months, a rather light punishment, which is softened by adding that it ascribed his conduct to an anxious disposition to maintain the honor of his nation and to advance its interests. This work is his defense. $750.00
