99. Taylor, James W. THE SIOUX WAR: WHAT HAS BEEN DONE BY THE MINNESOTA CAMPAIGN OF 1863: WHAT SHOULD BE DONE DURING A DAKOTA CAMPAIGN OF 1864, WITH SOME GENERAL REMARKS UPON THE INDIAN POLICY, PAST AND FUTURE, OF THE UNITED STATES. St. Paul, Office of the Press Printing Company, 1863. 16pp. printed in double-column format. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers bit dust soiled. Very good. "The title of this pamphlet would indicate that it related primarily to Minnesota, but it also has much about the Black Hills, and it is perhaps the earliest separate printing of a project for the creation of a territory, the Territory of Upsaroka, for the region out of which later Montana and Wyoming Territories were formed" - Streeter. Taylor had printed a similar pamphlet the year before in which he called for offensive measures against the Sioux in order to remove them from their threatening positions on the Minnesota frontier. Taylor was secretary of the Minnesota and Pacific Railroad, but he also worked as a journalist. In 1870 he became American consul at Winnipeg. AII (MINNESOTA) 528. DAB XVII, p.330. 100. [TEXAS]. [COLLECTION OF FORTY-TWO DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE GERMAN COLONIZATION OF TEXAS AND THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF GERMAN EMIGRANTS TO TEXAS (VEREIN ZUM SCHUTZE DEUTSCHER EINWANDERER IN TEXAS)]. Various places, , 1845-64. Approximately [220]pp. Mostly folio. Overall very good to fine condition. An important collection of documents concerning the Adelsverein, or the Society for the Protection of German Emigrants to Texas. The Society was organized in 1842 by a group of German noblemen for the purpose of acquiring land in Texas and encouraging German emigration. Beginning in 1844 the Adelsverein brought thousands of German emigrants to Texas, founding the town of New Braunfels and other towns in West Texas between Austin and San Antonio. The documents at hand trace the history of the Adelsverein from its first active years through bankruptcy and its evolution into the Texas and German Emigration Company, headed by Henry Fisher. This choice collection of printed documents, issued by the Society during its most active period, mainly in the antebellum statehood era, represents a crucial chapter in Texas colonization history. Documents include emigration contracts, minutes of meetings of the directors, fiscal papers, publicity material to attract emigrants, correspondence and reports from Texas back to the directors in Germany, and material on the dissolution and rearrangement of the Society's finances. Included are the following items:

107. Walton, Augustus Q. A HISTORY OF THE DETECTION, CONVICTION, LIFE AND DESIGNS OF JOHN A. MUREL [sic], THE GREAT WESTERN LAND PIRATE; TOGETHER WITH HIS SYSTEM OF VILLAINY, AND PLAN OF EXCITING A NEGRO REBELLION.... Cincinnati, [ca.1835]. [4],[17]-84,xii,[1]pp. plus illustrations. Frontis. Original pictorial wrappers. Rear wrapper detached, moderate wear to extremities. Internally clean. Very good. Later edition, presumably issued the same year as the first. One of the most famous American outlaw narratives, and one of the most misunderstood. The work was actually taken from the papers of Virgil Stewart, a by no means innocent part of Murrell's extensive plotting. Stewart created a bugaboo of Murrell as a mass murderer, and, perhaps more frightening for the antebellum South, the ringleader in a massive slave uprising. In fact, Murrell's main villainy consisted of a much simpler confidence scheme: he persuaded slaves to escape, then resold them into slavery elsewhere. Stewart, who may have been part of these schemes, played the injured innocent with a vengeance once Murrell was caught. "Rare" - Adams. HOWES W76. ADAMS SIX-GUNS 2301. COHEN 14041 (note). $1000.00

San F.,, Whitton, Towne & Co, 1845. 52pp. Original yellow printed wrappers. Moderate dust soiling, some light tanning and dampstaining. Overall very good. This scarce pamphlet prints a violent attack on Dr. W.A. Scott, the pastor of Calvary Church in San Francisco who had criticized the Vigilance Committee in the press and in his sermons. Wiegand alleges many things: "Why did not the Vigilance Committee arrest, try, convict, sentence and execute him for murder?...when, and by whom was he taken home by friends, too drunk to walk?...In what saloon does he play? At whose dance house has he been found, or with what prostitute?" Greenwood locates six copies. COWAN (1933), p.682. GREENWOOD 788. COHEN 4205. $1250.00

Milwaukee, Sith Du Moulin & Co , 1858. 40pp. plus additional matter as explained below. Original blindstamped cloth, gilt-stamped spine. Rubbed, spine gently sunned. Bit shaken. Overall quite good. In addition to the Berlin directory, this volume contains 1858 directories for Ripon (thirty-three pages), Berlin (forty pages), Whitewater (forty-two pages), Horicon (twenty-three pages), Waupun (twenty-four pages), and Waukesha (thirty-two pages). Each possesses a titlepage imprint of a local bookseller, but all were printed by the book and job printers, Jermain & Brightman, each being signed and paginated separately. They are also accompanied by an appendix, bound separately at the rear. Spear locates three similar copies, noting that the Cornell copy has a binder's title of RIPON CITY DIRECTORY. It would seem that the individual directories were printed for local distribution, with some copies being bound together to form one regional directory for southeastern Wisconsin. Needless to say, the present volume is quite rare, and given the variation of the binder's titles, possibly unique. SPEAR, p.375. $1250.00
