First edition. Forbes 1445: "A rare and important work. Simpson, a cousin of Sir George Simpson the governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, was first in Honolulu in 1839, and again in 1840 and 1841, as a company representative. When he returned to Honolulu in February 1842, however, the had severed his connection with that firm. During the Provisional Cession of Hawaii to Great Britain under Lord George Pauler (from February to July 1843), Simpson served briefly with Henry Sea as Joint Secretaries of the British Commission, before leaving Honolulu March 11, 1842, in the Schooner Albert, en route to London. As might be expected, this narrative is decidedly "pro-British" in its defense of Paulet's conduct, and very much at odds with the subsequent decision to hand Hawaii back to its Hawaiian ruler. The text includes the author's letters to Lord Aberdeen, articles from the Times, and Simpson's responses on the subject. In a chapter beginning on page 112, he writes about the advantages of keeping the Hawaiian Islands as a naval station. Simpson states that soon the islands would be "the depot and resting pint for the great traffic between North and South America... and China and the East Indies. They are, from their situation, the key to the trade." The frontispiece map include vignette inserts of Hanalei Bay, Pearl Harbor, Honolulu Harbor, Kairua Bay (Kona) and Byron Bay, Hilo..."
